The Hearing Impaired department was initially set up to help students, who have difficulty hearing, to be able to function in a regular public school.  The interpreter goes around, with the student, to each of their classes and interprets what the teacher is saying.

They use a a set of hand and facial gestures that represent words in the English dictionary.  In Sign Language the sentence structure is different.  They do not use the same Noun to Verb structure as someone would if they were talking.  They use a Verb to Noun structure.  Instead of saying "Bill played with the ball," they would say, "Ball he played with."

GISD is a cluster site for a Regional Day School for the Deaf Program, which covers all schools in a radius of 50 miles around Giddings.  All students of the Deaf are bused to a Giddings campus.

To receive the services of the RDSPD a student must have a significant hearing loss.

At the High school, Room 404 is the Deaf Ed classroom.
